Chapter Six

I triple checked systems, set up fire containment, and hung the space suits in the control room. I also made sure our radios were working in case the worst happened. Nothing like floating in space fighting for breath and the radio goes out. All the while, the temperature kept dropping and Ever worked on the engine. The windows were all dusted with condensation on the inside and I wiped them down, making sure the blue line was still set up.

“And how’s Mr. Tall, Dark, and Grumpy doing?” Ever asked, swaggering naked into the control room. His cock was hanging between his legs.

I had an undeniable urge to reach over and fondle him.

“You know that suit will burn up as soon as I put it on.” He pointed to the space suit.

“Yup, but if we blow up, I’m going to rip the pendant from the ship and give it to you so you can wear the space suit and survive.” I already had it all planned.

“So you do care.” He sat down next to me. “We have great sex and then you get all brooding and quiet on me.” Ever stared pointedly at me.

I took a deep breath and looked at him. “I’m just nervous about the race.” And I don’t want to get too attached to him. Once Ever went his way, I’d be on my own again. It was better not to get used to company. One way or the other I was going to save my sister and my priority would be her safety. Ever would just split my focus. At least, that’s what I was telling myself.

“Greetings racers!” The voice echoed as the screen flickered on. “Prepare for stage three, the final run in the Space Race of Heroes! Those who have then ten second advantage may now begin.”

“We can do this,” Ever said, settling into the seat and grabbing the controls.

“We will do this,” I added, glancing at the screen. Three. Two. One. I looked up. The blue start line vanished showing nothing but darkness scattered with stars and one close bright planet. Everyone in the race took off at once. It was a chaotic line of spaceships rushing forward. Two were faster than we were, but I watched as a missile flew and struck. The explosion was soundless, but I saw debris litter the darkness.

Ever flew us in anything but a straight line. We veered left and dipped low before moving right and higher.

I watched the screen. Even with the lack of that ten second lead, it showed one ship in front of us, two right on our ass and a shitload behind them. We were going to do this. We were going to fucking win! A red light clicked on, blinking. “We’re being targeted.” Well, that hope only lasted a few seconds. “Two missiles.”

Ever spun us around and shifted closer to the ship in first place.

“Do you want me to put up the shield?” I wasn’t sure how many hits we had on that.
